Elementary School Zones
The Cleveland City Schools Board of Education voted today to approve Elementary School Zone Proposal A. The new zones will go into effect beginning August 2019. The majority of students will not change schools. If students want to apply to cross-zone and stay at their current school or attend another school, there will be an online application available starting March 18. Parents will be notified of the timeline and procedures for applying to cross-zone.
As our community and school system have grown, we are thankful that our Board of Education and City Council recognized the need for a new elementary school. With the opening of Candy’s Creek Cherokee Elementary School in August 2019, there was an opportunity to realign school zones and reduce overcrowding at all elementary schools. The zoning process began in August with committees comprised of administrators, teachers, board members, and community members. The school system hosted two community meetings and encouraged online feedback. Committees used the online analytics mapping system, Guide K12, to draw zone lines and calculate the enrollment data for the draft proposals. Parents were able to use Guide K12 to locate their residence and school zone on both proposals.
Dr. Russell Dyer, Director of Cleveland City Schools, stated the following: “I appreciate the input of our school board, administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and community members as we’ve moved through this rezoning process. We started this process in August and have taken our time to ensure we’ve looked at all angles dealing with what is best for our students and schools as we continue to work toward our motto of Every Child, Every Day!”
